hospital bag essentials

As we await the arrival of baby no.2 this spring, here are the must-have items that I’m putting in my hospital bag as a second-time mom (beyond the basic hospital bag packing list).

Pouch :: I like to keep a zippered pouch within reach at my bedside packed with wellness products like face wipes, lip balm, deodorant, moisturizer, nipple cream, essential oils, dry shampoo, an eye mask, gum & snacks. This pouch from Pehr fits all of the essentials and can be repurposed for the diaper bag once baby is here.

Fan :: This stroller fan comes in handy when you need to cool off and can be wrapped around the hospital bedpost.

Nightlight :: This chargeable nightlight provides a soft glow for middle-of-the-night feeds without needing to turn on the stark overhead hospital lights. Consider battery-powered candles for an added calming ambiance.

Robe :: A lightweight robe is a nice option to throw on over your hospital gown for warmth without limiting access for nurses or nursing.

Pumping Bras :: After plenty of trial-and-error the first time around, these bras from Storq are both comfortable and functional for breastfeeding and pumping.

Swaddles :: Swaddling a newborn in a hospital blanket is no easy feat, so when the nurses are away it’s nice to have your own velcro and/or zippered swaddles for baby. I like to pack 2-3 options so that we have backup if they get soiled.

Bluetooth Speakers :: We used our bluetooth speakers more than the sound machine that we packed with baby no.1, so that we could listen to music during the day and stream white noise at night.

Phone Charger :: It goes without saying, but don’t forget the extra-long phone charger!

In addition to these items, we keep an extra tote in the car with a Boppy, pillows, blankets, bath towels, pump, snacks, and a celebratory bottle of wine to grab as needed. You can fill this bag with baby supplies from the hospital room when you are discharged!
